Prior to the event of Hurricane Katrina in September of 2005, Louisiana was experiencing a 1.2 per cent population growth. In the aftermath of the hurricane, Louisiana’s population has experienced a decrease of 4.1 per cent in its population due largely in part to residents migrating to other neighboring states in an attempt to quickly reestablish and rebuild lives.
